IToday VMware revealed Project Octopus at VMworld 2011 in Las Vegas. VMware stopped being a virtualization-only company a while ago and now it continues to develop technologies and infrastructure that improve the way people work in this post-PC era.
Project Octopus will leverage data sync technology from VMware Zimbra and Mozy to enable enterprise-grade collaboration and information/data sharing. Project Octopus will enable users to access files from any device and share them with people both inside and outside their company in a completely safe and secure way.
Project Octopus integrates with VMware Horizon, VMware View and Project AppBlast to create a secure enterprise cloud service.
After virtual infrastructure, cloud management applications, e-mail services, etc., VMware is now going to deliver file sharing capabilities completing their whole cloud solution. I think this is huge and there is definitely a demand for secure file sharing in the End User Computing space.
Many, many professionals are using technologies like Dropbox which is a huge security risk for a company. Project Octopus will take care about that. The data can stay in the private cloud owned by the customer or in a datacenter of the partner of your choice.
I think this is the next step in device independent computing. Give users a way to easily and quickly access their files on their tablets, smart phones, laptops and home desktops, in a safe and secure manner.
