Veeam

Last week Veeam made their newest version of Backup & Replication v6.5 available. Veeam published their latest version as having the “WOW-factor”. Let’s have a look at the new features and see if it really has the WOW-factor.

First: Veeam Backup & replication 6.5 now fully supports VMware vSphere 5.1 and Windows 2012 Hyper-V. With the support of those two platforms they are the first to be doing so.

Second: Even though Backup & replication uses no agents it is now able to restore e-mails, calendars or contacts from a user’s Exchange mailbox without restoring a entire mailbox first. With the explorer capabilities you can simply browse through your backups, select a user’s mailbox and select the item that you want to recover.

Third: Working together HP there is now a feature called “SAN snapshots” with which items can directly be recovered from snapshots. You will be able to restore VM’s, guest files or Exchange items from snapshots located on your SAN. Using this feature you will get the short RPO’s from snapshots and low RTO’s from Veeam Restore.

Fourth: Real-time monitoring of your backup infrastructure, identification of unprotected VMs, resource analysis all from a single management console. This feature does require Veeam Management Suite 6.5

After watching the video that Veeam made about these new features I was very impressed and definitely had a WOW moment. What made it even better is that all these features are also made available in the Veeam Backup Free edition! The free edition can be fully used and a upgrade to a paid version is done by simply adding the license in the console.

Besides the new features there are also some other improvements made for which a list can be found here. Link no longer working

For a comparison between the free and paid version you can look at this PDF.

With the new features being available in the free edition there is no reason for anyone to not try Veeam Backup & Replication v6.5. Try it and see if you to get the WOW!
