VMware for your Citrix environment

It sounds a bit strange, but yes, now there is VMware for your Citrix environment.horizon application bundle

VMware has a lot of products for a VMware environment, but what if you have a Citrix SBC or VDI solution? Now there is a VMware bundle for that as well: VMware Horizon Application Management Bundle.

A quote from the solution brief:

The Horizon Application Management Bundle supports truly stateless, just-in time desktops and applications, while dramatically driving down costs for Citrix environments.

What’s in the bundle?

applicationbundle

  • Realtime application delivery.
  • User Profile and Policy Management (VMware User Environment Manager/Immidio).
  • package applications (ThinApp).
  • Monitoring for apps, users and sessions (VMware vRealize Operations for Published Applications).
  • Unified Workspace for XenApp, RDSH, SaaS, ThinApp (Workspace Portal).

Realtime application Delivery

If you want realtime application delivery on your Citrix desktop/servers? VMware App Volumes takes care of this. With App Volumes you can have on demand application installation, without application virtualization.

User Profile and Policy Management

On February 3, VMware announced it had acquired Immidio, a user profile management company based out of the Netherlands and rebranded it as VMware User Environment Manager (UEM).

With VMware UEM you can apply policies and profile settings that follow users across devices and locations to make adoption, management, and day-to-day operations easier. Accelerate management, migrations and onboarding, including configuration settings for applications, shortcuts, mappings and group policy settings.

Packaging applications

VMware ThinApp is an application virtualization solution that is able to execute applications without them being installed by virtualizing resources such as environment variables, files and Windows Registry keys. The virtual environment presented to the client is a merged view of the underlying physical and virtual resources, thereby allowing the virtualization layer to fool the application into thinking that it is running as if it were fully installed. ThinApp doesn’t have a distribution mechanism. Instead you can use your own.

Monitoring for apps, users and sessions

The foundation of the monitoring is is vCenter Operations Manager, which can analyze the environmental statistics to provide a visual representation of the infrastructure’s health, security risk and efficiency. With VMware vRealize Operations for Published Applications you can do this for the published applications within your Citrix environment.

The video below shows vRealize Operations for Horizon.

Unified Workspace

VMware Workspace Portal lets you build a self-service app store so users can access virtually any application on any device for better workspace management. With support for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiatives, Workspace Portal lets IT centrally deliver, manage and secure these assets across devices. It reduces employee onboarding time, consolidates access to corporate resources for better intellectual property protection and reduces helpdesk calls.
